Patio weather is upon us! With that comes food, friends, and usually adult beverages. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a few drinks, but it's important to remember that alcohol isn't ideal for a healthy lifestyle. That being said, there are ways to enjoy it responsibly as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Before I get to the recipes, here are some tips on how to enjoy alcohol this summer in a healthy(er) way:
1. Drink lots of water
I know, I know, I'm always going on about water. Remember that it will keep you hydrated and help you metabolize the alcohol. For each adult bevy you consume, aim for at least one glass of water to go with it.
2. Cut down on the sugar
This is my biggest tip for you! While alcohol isn't that healthy, it's usually the mixers that do us in. Avoid mixing booze with pop, juice (yes, even juice!), or other sugary drinks. My go-to is soda water, since the fizz makes it fun, without the added junk.
3. Plan ahead
I know it sounds boring, but it's always best to have a plan so you can stay on track. How many drinks will you have? What will you be drinking? And eating? It's often best to have a snack before drinking, 1) so you don't get too buzzed too quickly, and 2) because booze isn't your best friend when it comes to making healthy decisions. Often that burger or pizza will look a lot more appealing after a few pints. So have a plan, and do your best to stick to it!
Without further ado, here are some of my favourite summer drinks:
I share a recipe for simple syrup in this post, but it's really best to forgo it altogether!
Fresh and Fruity Vodka Soda
Kaiserspritzer - one from the old country!
An Austrian summer favourite, a Kaiserspritzer is one part white wine to one part soda water, spruced up with a dash of elderflower syrup. Prost!
Enjoy! And let us know what your favourite summer beverages are in the comments section below.
